Since the update of the Essentials plugin is on external dite it cannot be apply on Aternos, and Essentials here is only working on 1.7.10 minecraft version up to, if your using 1.8-1.12.1 you can use EssentialsX plugin

Maybe the mod is outdated, and also make sure your version of your mod and in your server is the same.
