I had a similar problem and I managed to fix it.
I'm running windows 10 btw.
Open the windows start menu.
Type in Java
Click on the one that says Configure Java: Desktop App
Click on the option Network Settings under General.
From there click on Direct Connection.
Click apply then ok.
From now on you have to join your servers from the direct connect option on minecraft.
But as long as you know the server address you should be fine.
