Depending on the mods and what items / features etc. you use of each mod you may experience lag.
You might used items / systems of mods which cause the lag. If you try another world where you never used features of the problematic mods you won't notice lag.

The message that pops up is either 'unknown host' or 'can't resolve host name'.
If your friend gets these error messages he has probably a typo in the ip
