What makes you say that?
As soon as you install essentialsX it overwrites the vanilla /give command. However you can still access the vanilla give command using /minecraft:give.
Please also check if you have any plugins which might overwrite the /give command.

did you grant yourself the correct permissions?
Please note that permissionsex disables the OP system (AFAIK you can reenable it with the allow ops property in the permissionex config)
