My connection keeps timing out whenever I try to join my friend's server

For some reason whenever I try to connect to my friend's server my connection times out. The error message I get is: io.netty.channel.AbstractChannel$AnnotatedConnectException: Connection timed out: no further information. Is there anything I can do to connect to my friend's server?
