What is your username on Aternos?
Did you upload it as .zip or as bare folder? Did you already try to both?
Can you share the uploaded file with e.g. with dropbox?

tab open in the background could the delayed notifications be caused by that?
Yes, that could be the cause. Unfortunately this is browser behavior which we can not really change.
It might help to open our website in a separate chrome window where it is the only tab opened.
