There's a static limit in Minecraft that you can not raise it more than 256 blocks. At least for <1.18 versions

Does the modified nether work if you add it to an existing world on single player?

You can't do that with just a plugin. You need a proxy software like BungeeCord.
Aternos does not support BungeeCord.
