i have a server with mods, i can join perfectly fine with no errors but my friend cant join because of java.lang stackoverflowerror

check if your friend has the same version of forge as you and the mod versions match as well
also tell them to check if they have any extra mods that are not on the server. If so ask them to remove that aswell
