I recommend to you just use EssentialsX plugin and delete Essentials plugin and all will work fine

Mind that the original Essentials plugin (pack) only works up to Minecraft version 1.7.10.

Just use EssentialsX plugin and delete Essentials
Like Andreas say Essentials will work up to Minecaft version 1.7.2 -
