This is my first time making a server and I'm trying to install essentials on a 1.11.2 server but when I enter the server it doesn't work and I can't use /gamemode or /help.

Try to delete Essentials and Download EssentialsX.
Essentials is buggy so i recommend just use EssentialsX, and try to check your console log you can find the Error there -
Essentials isn't buggy, it only just works up to Minecraft version 1.7.10.

I dont know that plugin , but EssentialsX is better

EssentialsX only provides the core functions. I don't think that the Essentials additions will work, but you can try it.

EssentialsX is basically the same as Essentials. It's just been updated for the latest version. The people who ran Essentials stopped updating it due to some harsh life environments.
