Recommended amount of mods for a playable experience (1.12)

I tried to play Roughlike dungeons and adventures, but it was too heavy that I can barely load anything before I got disconnected. So what is the recommended amount of mods I should limit myself to, estimated? Im talking about mods that are kind of rich in terms of content like aether, twilight forest,etc.
