Remove Spigot/Bukkit as a server software choice

    I often play in other people's servers in Serverlist, and from my observations, the amount of server that uses Spigot instead of Paper is more than it should be.

    I don't see any reason not to remove Spigot from Aternos as Paper is literally its direct upgrade. It can run all Spigot/Bukkit plugins and has every single feature that spigot has to offer, and more.

      • The Aternos Team has less work to do
      • Less people uses Spigot, which will benefit both the server owner and the players
    • Cons
      • Virtually none

    Elaborate? Spigot and Paper are essentially "ONE" themselves, abeit Spigot is objectively inferior.

    They don't need to. FYI Paper is literally a drop-in replacement for Spigot. I imagine its not that hard for the team to automate replacing it.

    Something being inferior just does not justify anything, besides, people should get a choice in what they use. This is no excuse behind removing a software and will never be taken as a valid reason.


    Bukkit was removed because it was never a recommended software and the spigot + paper softwares use it's API so Bukkit was virtually useless to have.

    You're asking the team to force-switch everyone against their will to a software that's A FORK of the original, and is still different in some perspectives?

    Updating Spigot isn't work, it happens automatically. However, answering hundreds of requests why Spigot is gone is a lot of work.


    We certainly won't remove Spigot from Aternos to force users to install PaperMC instead. If someone wants to use Spigot, they can.

    We can look into how we could better communicate the benefits of using Paper over Spigot to our users, but fully removing Spigot would be an overkill solution for a problem that didn't exist in the first place.
