The waiting time depends on the demand of servers. The more people want to start their server at the same the longer the queue is. We can't influence the waiting time but we give our best to keep the waiting time as low as possible.

what can i see in the log
The server log usually shows error messages. By investigating the log and analyzing the error messages you can fix the errors.

We only keep the latest backup of everyone's server, we only have limited capacities.

It is not possible to use plugins and mods at the same time. If you switch from a non-modded server to a modded one everything will be deleted. You even get a warning message you have to confirm before.
You can try to restore a backup at the My Server page or upload an old save of your world you hopefully have made. It is important to regularly download and save your world to prevent losses.

Anscheinend wurde die Welt nicht richtig gespeichert oder im System ist etwas durcheinander gekommen. Starte mal deinen Server und schau, ob eine aktuellere Welt noch da ist.

Do you have any plugins installed? Make sure your friends try to break blocks outside the spawn protection.

The original Essentials plugin only works up to version 1.7.9. If you want to use it on newer versions you have to use a fork of Essentials like EssentialsX for example.

I was wondering how long after not starting a server is a map deleted? I imagine you would need too eventually.
There is no fixed time. If you plan not to use your server for a long time download and save your world to your computer.
I'm also curious as to how Aternos makes money or stays afloat?
