so my friend installed a mod onto his aternos server he booted it up and the world was gone...

If you install mod on your server, your server will get reinstall. Before you will download the mod you will see the button "Reinstall"

I mean before you will download a new mod please download your world and save it on your computer

Your friend should've seen a warning like this:
If he ignored it it's his own fault. He can try to restore a backup (mind the date the backup was created) or upload an old save of his world he hopefully downloaded before. It's important to regularly download and save the world to prevent such losses.
