You need to probably configure Essentials, which I have no clue how to do.

I had the same problem and I think that this problem is the result of a wrong essentials version. So for example you can´t play with essentials 1.7.10 and minecraft bukkit 1.8.
Try another plugin like admincmd or commandbook or both. -
