I've been thinking about making my (fairly new) server cracked because I know it could gain traction from that and I'd like a sizeable server. My server is an anarchy server where there is no bans. What are the upsides and downsides to having a cracked anarchy server?

Upsides: People without a legal Minecraft account can join the server
Downside: Authentication is disabled which causes:
- People can impersonate other players e.g. OPs and have their permissions (Fixable with a auth plugin -> Not a good and proper solution, but it should fix the basic problem)
- Banning does not really work as people can just change their name and IP to join the server again
- Skins do not work (Fixable with a plugin)
- Issues with playerdata when moving worlds between servers / clients

Thank you, I think I'll just stick to premium.

I've had experience with Cracked servers, and they seem to have more overall lag than premium servers. That, or it was just the server's mod selection. I dunno.
Anyway, legal installations are better to work with anyway because then you can't have people impersonating staff and abusing etcetera.
Premium is the right choice for more situations, primarily because Cracked clients are considered piracy, which is illegal.
