Hey hey hey!
Servers for Minecraft PE (Pocket Edition) are now available on Aternos.
Currently we support the three community made server softwares ClearSky, Genisys and Nukkit.
But this thread is not only to announce this, but also to answer some questions that will (probably) be asked frequently.
Where is my super cool aternos.me IP? Why does my IP change on every start? I HATE THAT!
Yes, it sucks. And we hate it, too. But currently there is no other way to do this, because Mojang decided somehow not to support SRV records in MCPE.
So what are SRV records?
Aternos has a very dynamic system, allowing us to host hundreds and thousands of servers on multiple machines at the same time. Your server almost never
starts on the same machine at the same port as it was before. This also means that your IP and port change with every start, too. You know this as the "DynIP".
But there is a cool feature called SRV records, that allows us to create an aternos.me IP, that redirects you to the correct machine and port. We change that
SRV record for you on every server start in the background, so you never have to switch your IP in your Minecraft client.
Cool feature for MCPC, but sadly not possible in MCPE. Why? We don't know, ask Mojang.
I want plugins! Give me plugins pls!
Good to know that we are not alone, but the MCPE server softwares are a pretty chaotic mess. There are lots of different server softwares with different places
for plugins and they even need different programming languages for their plugins (ClearSky and Genisys are PHP, Nukkit is Java).
Right now, we see no good platform for MCPE plugins, not to mention that there is no platform with an API (like Bukget or Spiget).
We will add plugins, if there is such a platform available, if you know any good place, don't hesitate to tell us.
Servers have bugs. I can't do this and that doesn't work.
This answer is also valid for MCPC servers, but we have seen especially lots of bugs in the MCPE versions. We are not the developers of the server software, so
it might help them, if you report the bugs to them and not to us. There is a big difference between MCPC and MCPE server softwares, because Mojang hasn't
published a server software for MCPE (yet). This means that every part from world generation to crafting a pickaxe was completely rewritten by voluntary
community developers. Craftbukkit or Spigot on the other side are "just" modified vanilla versions and base on the work of Mojang.
Again we don't know why Mojang did this, better ask them.
