Your friend should've seen a warning like this:
If he ignored it it's his own fault. He can try to restore a backup (mind the date the backup was created) or upload an old save of his world he hopefully downloaded before. It's important to regularly download and save the world to prevent such losses.

EssentialsChat is included in the original Essentials package. Mind that Essentials only works up to Minecraft version 1.7.10 though.
