chat not working?

    hello. the chat in my server doesn't work unless we use /say or /msg [user] .
    every time we try to chat regularly, it doesn't send through, and no error messages pop up neither.
    sometimes it completely crashes the server though, with the message "Chat Message Validation Failure"
    is there anyway to fix this? i'm not using any mods/plugins that modify my chat i dont believe, so i'm totally lost on what to do. it doesn't look like my log shows any crash errors or any sign of what might be happening, though maybe i'm missing something. please help
