I was playing on my server with friends. When we left the game and came back our items disappeared from our inventory. It sometimes say:
[Server: saved the game]
[Server: The player idle timeout is now 10 minutes]
Server doesn't save items in my inventory

If your items where already gone when you joined your server, it may not have saved the playerdata from earlier
It sometimes say:
[Server: saved the game]
[Server: The player idle timeout is now 10 minutes]
that is unrelated and does not have effect on your items, that only sets the time for the afk - kick
And of course that the server has saved

For the future, I recommend typing /save-all before you log off
