Hostile mobs not spawning

    Hey,
    Just wondering if anyone knows why hostile mobs are not spawning in my server! I am using a vanilla server. Difficulty: easy Monsters: true.
    I have tried typing these commands into the server console:
    difficulty easy
    gamerule doMobSpawning true
    But neither worked.
    Any ideas?
