I have noticed many people have been having problems with essentials. I had many dilemmas like this in the past. Essentials does not work with most new versions of Minecraft. Instead try to use Essentials-X. It comes with the same features you would get with essentials. Additional Essentials plugins (Essentials Chat and things like that) may not come with it. But i am sure you can find plugins that do the same thing.
If essentials doesn't work I'd recommend this plugin

essentials-x is basicly essentials just abit moreusefull well to me because it allowed me to set item prices in game regular essentials did not let me

Like essentialChat etc -
its not same you cant have colors in chat
or set prefix and pex sucks -
