  • Well, hi everyone , Im a new user of Aternos minecraft servers and as I have seen there is a lot of people complaining about the waiting queues, and because I don't want to complain, I just want to give a couple to the devs of Aternos, As every other minecraft hosting page you guys need to make money to self sustain and win something to (obiously).

    So my suggestions are:

1.-Why you don't make, maybe, monthly premium service so people can pay to skip the queues, It's a win in both sides, one, you guys make more money, that means more servers, better service and can win some more money, and another win is for the users, The ones who want to skip queues they just pay the service, and the ones who doesn't want to pay have lower queues thanks to the guys who pay premium and so extra servers.

2.-Another suggestion and I think this is the best one to keep the businessplan as it is right now is as simple as making an escalating server deploy, It's the easiest way in my opinion, but you guys maybe are thinking in what this method consists? It's really simple, if there is a lot of people trying to deploy a server the system automaticaly detects that and rise up some more servers so the waiting queues are shorter (depending on how you guys want to do that escalating system, the queues can be as twice as fast, or just rise up a server in 1min), and it benefits to when there are a low number of users trying to deploy servers, in that case the system just low the server quantity. Basicaly it's just a system that summons or turns down the number of servers depending on the quantity of users trying to deploy a server, as simple as that, with this method you guys have to pay less servers when there are less users and when there are a lot of users you guys just make more money because lower queues means more people using your services, don't think this is a crazy idea, this days most services use this method, an example you all surely know is amazon itself.

There you go guys, I'll wait for your feedback guys, from the devs and the comunity, so we all together can improve the ideas or explain me why this are not an option. If you've made it that far, I just want to wish you a nice day :D and any suggestion, or improvement is welcome.

PS: The ideas can be together aswell it is not one or the other idea.

  • Well, according to me i think they will not add the premium service because everyone knows Aternos is the world largest free hosting in the world...Yes, you cam get a keys in event in aternos and in twitter give aways..And queue is always in their According on my research here on aternos the Aternos team decided to keep the queue and The Queue is too long because many peoples is trying to start their server too... Long Queue = More peoples simple as that... Aternos cant start a thousands server at once so they need the queue..

Yeah, that's totaly true, that's why I said the second suggestion is the one I liked the most, the first one breaks* aternos completly, that's true, but the second I thi k It has only benefits for the both parts, aternos team and the final users, making more profit for the team and a better service for the users.

Thanks for your feedback, i really appreciate that.

First, why do we have a queue?
We have huge amount of users who want to use our service every day. Unfortunately we don't have enough physical servers to give everyone a free minecraft server at the same time.
If this occurs we have to decide who will get a server and who won't get a server. For this case we follow the simplest and fairest principle.
    First come, first serve.
It's like in an ice cream parlor. You have to wait until one of the employees has time to serve you. People who came before you are served first.
The more people want ice cream, the longer you have to wait for your ice.
Same at Aternos: The more people want a server, the longer is the queue.

What can we do to shorten the queue?
Basically there are two things which can shorten the queue:

    • Less people who want a server
    • More physical servers where we can run your minecraft-server

The first option is not really changeable by us. We can't control the demand, no one can do that.
So, the only thing we can do is to put more phyiscal servers into our system.
The problem is, all that costs money. As you maybe know we only finance us through ads. We are really happy that we can finance Aternos only through ads and don't have to sell our service.
Our biggest benefit is that we are free. Completely free.
We don't need to sell goodies or premium features and we really like that. This is one of our biggest differences to our competitors.

So, just to reply to your first suggestion: We just don't want that. It's a very big distinctive feature which we don't want to loose.

    To answer your second question:
Physical servers in the configuration we need them have a longer delivery time.
Our servers have need a special proportion of CPU power and the amount of RAM built into a server because we don't want to waste resources.

Yes there are hosters in the world who can provide us servers within seconds. The problem is that we need to send the mc-server of a user to this phyiscal machine of the other hoster.
At the end of the day we just pay so much to operate that single physical server as we benefit from it.

And before you ask why we don't order servers to keep them in stock:
It would be dump to order a server and keep them offline to turn them on just for the hard times. Every server we pay for is actually in use. (Out of defective ones :) )

What do we actually do, to shorten the queue?
We just order more and more servers, as much as our financial resources allow us :)
Since the beggining of 2017 we were able to add up to 700 gb of RAM to our system.
    And much more will follow.

There were also times when we could not set up new servers.
If i think about the end of the last year (October to December). We had waiting times of over 2 hours on saturdays.
So we are really happy about the current situation

I hope i was able to answer your questions :)

Roman has already answered it pretty well, I just wanted to make one thing clear:

That we are free for everyone and forever is not just a feature to be different, it is mainly a belief.
We have started Aternos years ago and are still running it without earning any money. We do that,
because we think that we are doing something good and that we are helping people to share
some fun time with their friends. For me, this is worth more than money.

  • First of all, yes you answered all my questions :D

I', sorry, I did not know that you guys got your own servers, I just assumed you gous were using a cloud hosting platform, in that case, yeah it's a hard work if you wana migrate the whole platform to the cloud in a hosting platform, and maybe is more expensive? But about you told me of sending the mc-server to the hosting, I was thinking more about a direct user to platform system, and that's only a one time operation, then the server is going to deploy in 1 second, platforms like azure or Amazon web services gives you the option to do that, just admin your machines from there.

    Benefits

    • Much master service.
    • More servers.
    • Automatic escalating system.
    • Cheaper (If there are 0 servers on it costs 0 for you)

    Cons

    • Hard to migrate.
    • Initial inversion.

Once told that, I don't want to make you guys change the whole platform for me :D, I get your points why this is not possible now, just consider it an option for a future, if it's possible, Phisical servers can't not be expanded a lot :D, and with time it just gets a pain in the ass.

Thanks for your reply, have a good day

Cloud services are cool stuff and we have an eye on that, but they are mainly made for web, api and data stuff. (don't quote me on that xD)
Minecraft servers are a different kind of load, they need a huge amount of RAM and CPU resources and fast disks/SSDs to run well. We even
offer modpacks on Aternos, which is way more resource intensive than vanilla or some plugins.
Cloud services are really expensive if you need lots of power like we do. Just as a rough estimate, we would pay around 4 times as much on
AWS as we currently do, this is not even something to think about.
If you don't believe that, just have a look at Mojang's Realms. They are hosted on AWS and cost around 8€/$ for a 10 slot server with vanilla.
I would estimate that ca. 512MB are necessary to run that, maybe it's even one GB. And now search for any other paid host out there, they are
    much cheaper than that.

  • well I can say that youre doing a great job with it... your pretty much the best free mc server hosting site because I've seen other free ones and NONE ever offers unlimited players and plugins! You guys are the best.. only 9 people to make the best hosting site....Also about the queue...

    Facts for shorter time:

    - Weekdays have shorter queue times

    - the more closer to night time (irl, EST) the shorter the queue is... just a way to have shorter queue times

  • Ya, This is the best Free hosting... According to me this is the best because its offer unlimited slots and plugin for free only and I know the queue is too long sometimes Queue is not long everyday so its Cool [ Not too long everyday] ... 8)

    Thank you :aternos:
