This is serious and I need some answers. My friend created a server that we played on for a month. We had gotten a full set of diamond gear and almost a stack stored away each, but then 1.16 came, and he broke the news to me that the day before it came out, he tried to launch the server but he entered the world with an empty inventory and an entirely different Minecraft world. I was very confused, and I looked around until I saw a ruined portal and realized we were on Minecraft 1.16. I asked him five times if he had touched any world settings in the settings page and he said he didn't do anything, so the update was the only cause. We really want our server back, we were a week away from the ender dragon. I was wondering if there was any way we could get our server back 
Server was completely reset and replaced with a new Minecraft World when 1.16 came out.

If you don't have a backup, there is no way to restore your world

Must you manually generate a new world?
Yes, he did that manually. He had to click the generate button on the worlds page, which also contains a message that the old world will be deleted then
