How can I update my server to version 1.16.0 (bedrock edition) without losing my world that was created with the previous version? Thank you! 
Already tried downloading world and uploading it with the updated server but it won't work.

Just install the new version on the software page.
If you stay on the same software you should not loose anything.
But we always recommend to create a backup

Are you switching from pocketmine to bedrock?

the pocketmine worlds are different then bedrock worlds. Unless you can convert in some way (not on aternos self), you can keep your world.

If you mean to get the new bedrock version but on pocketmine, you'll have to wait till they publish it.
You can choose to convert to bedrock but as you probably guessed, that's not recommended due to your world.

Pocketmine 3.14.0 which was released some hours ago has basic 1.16 support: https://aternos.org/software/v/pocketmine/3.14.0
