It wont allow me to join my friends sever

I attempted to join my friends sever but it wouldn't allow me. The sever was online and two other friends were able to join. It said it was an outdated sever and as i went into the sever it said "Connection Lost Internal Exception: io.netty.handler.codec.DecoderException: java.io.IOException: Packet 0/26 (pn) was larger than expected, found 175 bytes extra whilst reading packet 26" i have restarted my computer, they have restarted the server, and we have read most every thread on this. We are still looking for a solution. Thank you for reading.

We have tried sharing it and it didnt work i woke up a few minutes ago and retried but no luck. I am using the one from the official minecraft website. I had just bought it yesterday. I am using the java version, and so are they. I am on version 1.16.2. they are on 1.16.2 as well.

The sever software is java and the version is 1.16.2
