Changing server version

So me and some friends have a server we've been playing on for a while i version 1.13.2, but we would like to update it to the newest version. I tried reading on some of the other threads, and made a backup before switching version, but honestly, it was like entering a horror map. The grass was cobweb, ghast were everywhere and the music was.. broken to say the least. Lucky i made the backup So is there any way to change version without making it corrupted and.. creepy?

I honestly don't know.. If it'sthe one at the front of the server page that says software, then it is forge, but i really don't know much about it..
