Mobs not spawning

  • Hello Aternos forum's members,

I'm writing this thread because the server I'm playing in is experiencing sort of an issue with mobs spawning.

The issue appears randomly, sometimes mobs spawn regularly, sometimes they won't spawn at all.

This to say that today, like 10 minutes ago, I went searching for endermen in the overworld to get enderpearls but while moving all along the surface of my world no mobs spawned. I saw a creeper and a skeleton at first but then, once I moved some chunks ahead, there were no mobs.

The attached screenshot is proof of what I experienced. You can check the enlarged minimap provided by Xaeros minimap client-side mod which is not failing representing the mobs icons because after taking the screenshot I exit my character through the Tweakeroo mod's free-cam, checked every part of the loaded chunks (caves included, obviously) and not mob was there.

This is a huge issue considering a bug like this one can prevent players from acquiring precious resources, in my case enderpearls to activate the end portal, or preventing farms from working.

The server I play on is not mine but I'm 100% sure it's set with the normal default vanilla settings (no paper, no spigot and not non-defaults rules set).

How can I solve this issue?

  • Hello Powerful845tiger,

    thanks for the kind reply.

I read that article before posting in the forum and while, yes, mob spawning mechanics can be wonky, it still strange and buggy to see no mobs for an entire night when being alone in your server and only loading the chunks you're in.

Mobs spawn is based on mobcap. Each player entering a server raises the mob cap.

In my case I was alone so the mob cap was 70.

Given the fact that I was alone and only loading the chunks around me I should've seen a variety of 0 to 70 mobs around me but I saw none for a whole night.

I also didn't move after a while and that makes it so that mobs that are inside a 32 blocks radius around me should spawn (if light count of the grass blocks is below 0/15, and it was all around me being night time) and remain there without a chance to randomly despawn, as mobs farther than 32 blocks do on behalf of Minecraft mob spawning rules.

Furthermore, hostile mob have a spawn cycle of 1 tick, or 1/20 of a second, and the TPS of the server, as seen in the screenshot by the minihud mod, was at 20, this means that given the good aforementioned conditions mobs should try to spawn at least once every 20th of a second but it wasn't the case for me.

So, the occurrence of not having any mob spawning for the entirety of a in-game night is suspect and should be look into, apart for it being destructive to gameplay consistency and enjoyment from us.

Finally, I ask you to please help me understand what went wrong in my case scenario to avoid experiencing another time.

    Thanks,

    DJ
