  • In the thread low render distance in 1.14.4 it was claimed that render distance had no effect on mob spawn rates.

After tests I've been conducting with bukkit & spigot in 1.14.4 & 1.14.2 I believe the two are correlated. Mobs despawn at a distance of 128 blocks (https://minecraft.fandom.com/wiki/Despawn).

With the server render distance being 8 chunks this sits on the 128 block boundry. Therefore mobs do not despawn and instead enter stasis until the chunk is loaded again.

This means players eventually notice no new spawns in an area because the mobs will be concentrated in a particular area they've not cleared out. I.e. Unless a mob is killed it does not disappear and remains part of the spawn limit forever. Usually with a render distance of 12 the chunks stay loaded long enough for the despawn process to occur.

The mob spawn issue isn't being seen by players on 1.14.2 because the render distance is not high enough.

It would be very much appreciated if aternos would increase the distance just slightly to put this theory to the test.

the mob spawn issue isnt seen by players on 1.14.2 because that issue isnt on 1.14.2 but on all 1.14+ versions but 1.14.2

According to some reports and our own tests, the performance of 1.14 improves a lot if they have set a reduced render distance.

In the thread low render distance in 1.14.4 it was claimed that render distance had no effect on mob spawn rates.

We're getting a lot of complaints about too few mobs spawning on 1.14+ servers.

It's correct that a reduced render distance causes fewer mobs to spawn, but not nearly no mobs to spawn at all.

Besides the performance problems there are massive mob spawning problems in 1.14+.

You're getting something wrong. Render distance has an effect on mob spawning, but in the special case of MC 1.14.4 there are bugs that affect the spawning behavior so massively that almost nothing spawns anymore.

Here is an article where we describe this: https://support.aternos.org/hc…-Spawning-on-1-14-servers

It also contains a link to the corresponding bug report regarding mob spawning on 1.14 servers

I wouldn't say that 1.14.2 is error free but from our experience the mobspawning behaviour was "normal" from the user's point of view.
